Lady Dragons roll at Bardstown

Green County swept both Fort Knox and the host team Bardstown in the 2008 Class ‘A’ Fast Pitch Softball Tournament. They won by margins of 10-0 over Fort Knox and 9-2 over Bardstown. Green County’s busy week started on April 15 with a decisive 19-0 shellacking of Caverna. The Lady Dragons suffered a 2-4 loss last Wednesday to Larue County and a 0-1 defeat the next evening to Taylor County.
Caverna at GCHS
The Caverna pitchers had trouble from the start at Tommy Mills Field against Green County. When they managed to get the ball over the plate, the Lady Dragons would usually hit it. Eight first inning walks, five GCHS base hits, and a sacrifice fly led to 13 Green County runs in the bottom of the opening inning. The home team added six more runs to their lead in their next at-bats. Seven more base hits in that inning ballooned the GCHS lead out to 19-0 after only two innings.
Becca Bush had another strong outing on the pitcher’s mound. She gave up no runs or hits, and she allowed no Caverna batters to reach base. Ashley Coomer had four RBI’s and Jade Hayes batted in three runners for the Green County offense. The game was called after two and one-half innings due to the run deferential.
Larue County at GCHS
Larue County scored two runs in their first at-bats and never trailed in picking up a District 18 win at Tommy Mills Field. Micah Jones got one of the runs back for Green County in the bottom half of the inning. She scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Hawks put another run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 3-1.
After threatening to score in the bottom of the fourth inning, Green County finally pushed a runner across home plate in the bottom of the seventh. They got the tying runners in scoring position but couldn’t get the key hit to get them home.
Taylor County at GCHS
Green County starting pitcher Bush gave up only one hit to visiting Taylor County and struck out 10 Lady Cardinal batters, but she didn’t get the win against the undefeated guests. Although her Lady Dragon team banged out five base hits and struck out only twice, they couldn’t push a runner across home plate. Green County never got a runner as far as third base in the game, but they had runners at both first and second in each of the last two innings.
Green County at Class ‘A’ Region
Green County opened play in the Class ‘A’ Region with a win over Fort Knox that was halted in the sixth inning due to the implementation of the 10-run rule. The Lady Dragon offense scored two runs in the first inning, five in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth before the game was called. Jones and Jordan Perkins each had three hits and scored two runs. Jones’ double and Morgan Bale’s triple were the Lady Dragons’ only extra-base hits. Perkins led the team in RBI’s with two. Seven Green County hitters batted a runner in. Kasey Estes pitched a superb game. She gave up only one hit and struck out 11 Fort Knox batters.
The Lady Dragons threatened to score against Bardstown in both the first and second innings without success. However, three runs in the third, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh gave Green County plenty of offense to get a win over the Lady Tigers. Bardstown scored one in the third inning and another in the bottom of the sixth. Bush and Perkins each had three base hits for the Lady Dragons during the game. Two base hits each by Hayes, Breanna Sprowles and Brittany Estes—one of hers a home run—added to the GCHS offensive attack.
